Conference/Seminar/Workshop Grants

The Foundation will consider applications from institutions for grants to hold conferences, workshops, or seminars on specific subjects related to the Foundation's goals and objectives. Applicants are urged to seek matching funds. Applicants should submit the names of all participants, as well as titles and abstracts of papers to be presented. The academic background of the participants and the significance of the meeting will be key factors in the evaluation process. Budgets for conferences should not exceed $25,000. Applications should be filed before September 15, or January 15 for conferences to be held during the following six-month period. In principle, the Foundation does not provide funding for annual meetings. Priority will be given to collaborative projects involving institutions in Taiwan. Projects on Taiwan Studies are especially encouraged.

Application materials

1. Project abstract.
2. A detailed itemized budget (If this sum is to be supplemented by matching funds, please include this information in the budget).
3. A description of the proposed project of no more than 7 pages in length.
4. Curriculum vitae of the project director and all co-directors, including lists of publications over the last five years that are related to the proposed project.
5. Endorsement letter(s) from the project director and co-director(s) institution(s).
6. Conference schedule and list of participants, as well as titles and abstracts of the papers to be presented.

Application Procedures

1. All applications must be submitted to our online application database. E-mail and paper applications will not be accepted. The online application database is available annually from August 1 to September 15 and December 1 to January 15 of the following year (to start the application process, please click here).
2. The Foundation will initially direct all messages and correspondence about the applications to respective project directors. If a grant is approved, the CCK Foundation, in most cases, will then correspond with the university's grant administrator to arrange payments over the period of the grant.
3. The Foundation does not provide reviewer’s reports.

Deadline

1. The deadlines for Conference and Seminar Grant applications are:
   September 15 — for Conferences and Seminars from January through June of the following year.
   January 15 — for Conferences and Seminars from July through December of the same year.
2. Final results for applications made before September 15 are announced in late December. Results of applications submitted for the January 15 deadline are announced in early June.

Important Information

1. The Foundation's grants provide support for research on Chinese Studies in the humanities and social sciences.
2. Funding is not provided for capital equipment (including computers and printers), building design, construction, or maintenance.
3. Funding is not available for university administrative costs including overhead or endowments.
4. The Foundation does not subsidize administrative expenses or the purchase of equipment.
5. Foundation funds can only be transferred to and managed by institutional accounts. Endorsement letter(s) from the applicant's institution must express the institution's willingness to comply with these procedures.
6. An applicant who already has a two-year research grant is not eligible to apply for a CCK Grant for Scholars that would run concurrently with the research grant. The research grant must end before an applicant can apply for a CCK Grant for Scholars.
7. The Foundation encourages applications with matching funds from other sources.
8. It is strongly recommended that the scholars whose projects focus explicitly on cross-cultural or comparative studies should apply for the ACLS/CCK Comparative Perspectives on Chinese Culture and Society grant. This program can be found at: https://www.acls.org/programs/chinese-culture/
9. Applicants may NOT apply for the CCK Conference/Seminar/Workshop Grant and ACLS' Comparative Perspectives on Chinese and Society Grant at the same time.
