Science and Civilization in China: History of Medicine

Our knowledge of the historical development of Chinese science has in large part been shaped by the long-term efforts of the eminent scholar Joseph Needham (1900-1995), especially his monumental series entitled Science and Civilisation in China. The Foundation supported this research effort with a grant to fund Part 6 of Volume 6 of this series, which treated one of his most beloved subjects: the history of Chinese medicine. This volume, co-authored with Lu Gwei-Djen 魯桂珍 (1904-1991), was published in 2000 by Cambridge University Press.
